Introduction to LVP Flooring
Okay, how to choose LVP flooring was a HUGE conundrum for us when we started our home renovation project. So I am here to guide you with everything I wish I had known before we started looking at all the options out there. If you’re like me, and on tight a budget but still wanting that sleek modern look, then Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring is your new best friend! Now, we’ve all been there—watching those home renovation shows, drooling over the hardwood floors that cost more than my car, right? Well, guess what? LVP is the sneaky lookalike that’s got all of us fooled, in a good way!
It’s gaining popularity because it’s versatile enough to suit any room looking for an upgrade. Whether you’ve got a bustling family home or you’re just trying to spruce up your downtown studio, LVP can handle the foot traffic while keeping your wallet in check. You get that polished look without the hefty price tag or the maintenance drama of the real thing. And if you’re anything like me, you’re all for maximum style with minimum fuss!
- Smart Savings: LVP offers that high-end look without the high-end budget.
- Flexibility: Its versatility means it suits a range of spaces and design needs.
- Rising Star: Its growing popularity makes it a trendy choice for homeowners.
Understanding LVP Quality and Price
Okay, let’s talk about the price versus quality when it comes to luxury vinyl plank, or LVP flooring. We all love a good deal, but I bet you also want floors that last longer than your latest phone upgrade, am I right? Well, the price per square foot is your first clue. It’s like a quick peek into how well your flooring will stand up to life’s little dramas.
Spend less, and you might snag a bargain beauty to make your wallet happy. But, fair warning, the quality might not be up to par with your teeming toddler or that overzealous pet. Fork out a bit more, and you’re stepping into the realm of thicker wear layers and a sturdier build sure to handle the high traffic of your family’s indoor lane-swapping.
Think of price as a hint to the durability and the luxury part of “luxury vinyl plank”. The more you pay, the better it’s likely to bear up under the scuffs, spills, and slides of your daily domestic life. So, weigh your budget against your family’s needs and potential abuse your floors may endure, and you’ll land on an LVP that’s both pleasing to your eye and poised to last.
Where to Shop for LVP Flooring
So, you’re on the hunt for LVP flooring and your budget’s giving you that side-eye, huh? Well, let’s talk about where to find those perfect planks without breaking the bank. Now, this is all going to depend upon where you live. The cost of living is higher in some places, and the stores in your area may differ.
We ended up going with Floor & Decor! It’s pretty much a gold mine for affordable flooring. I definitely also recommend taking a trip over to the big-box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. They usually have a diverse selection and sometimes you snag a great deal. Personally, I found that Floor & Decor pricing was better for what I was looking for specifically, which was foam back LVP in a neutral tone. (More on underlayments and color later!)
But, don’t forget about your local flooring stores too. They could have unique options that online or mainstream spots don’t carry. Plus, supporting local businesses is never a bad thing. Lastly, if you’re working with a contractor they may have special discounts with a local place and you could save money that way.
And, if you’re all about convenience, the internet’s got your back. Check out websites that send samples straight to your door – it’s like dating around before the big commitment. Just ensure you’re browsing reputable sites with good reviews, because catfishing isn’t just for online dating – it can happen with flooring too! I have heard great things about Flooret, so definitely check them out if that’s the route you want to go.
Bottom line: Cast a wide net. Compare prices, styles, and most definitely get those samples. Your wallet will thank you, and so will your floors.
The Importance of Samples
So, you’ve settled on doing your floors with LVP, and your wallet is giving you a thumbs up. But you 100% need to see samples in person. Yes, grabbing a sneak peek of your potential floors is a must. Why? Because what you see online or in the glossy store lights can be like a burger in a fast-food ad—it doesn’t always look the same when you get it. (I mean nothing against fast food burgers, Big Macs are life.)
We definitely found that the picture online almost never looked like how it does in real life. That ‘perfect’ shade I saw on my screen? Once I found it in the store, I was less impressed. And then once I found my perfect neutral toned match in-store, once I looked it up online and it looked way to orange-y and warm. I never would have chosen it if I was just searching online!
The left is the photo of what we chose online (we went the Piedmont Bend Rigid Core LVP with Foam Back). Versus what it looked like in-store! It looks totally different! The online photo has super warm tones while in the store photo it looks much cooler. In real life, our flooring feels mostly neutral, but definitely leans more cool without being gray.
Assessing Colors in Your Space
So, let’s talk about another crucial step in how to choose LVP flooring color. Testing it out in your space. While you might love how it looks in the showroom, the LVP flooring that looks totally perfect could fall flat in your home. So before you swipe that card, remember the lighting in the store is way different than natural light or the lighting you have in your home.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret that’s going to save you from a case of buyer’s remorse. Grab a few samples of that LVP flooring and take them home. Now, find the spot where you’re planning and lay down those samples next to each other. Then, it’s time to play the waiting game.
The same flooring in my home in different rooms, lighting and time of day! Looks totally different. (Don’t mind the mess we are under construction still!)
Take pictures of those samples throughout the day as the lighting changes. Morning light will have that sample showing its true colors, and come dusk, you might see an entirely different side. I swear, it’s like the flooring has mood swings. It may go from cool and contemporary at noon to all warm and cozy by evening light (talk about versatility, am I right?).
Also, don’t forget your artificial lighting. It can throw in a plot twist too. Observe your samples with every flick of the switch, from the glow of your reading lamp to that bright kitchen lighting. At the end of the day you’ll likely know which sample felt the best in the space, but you also have the photos to reference too to make sure you are completely confident.
How to Choose LVP Flooring Color
Okay, let’s get down to picking the perfect color for your luxury vinyl plank flooring, because trust me, it can be a game-changer. First off, toss aside the idea that there’s a one-size-fits-all shade, because there isn’t. What works is what works for you. Look around your space. Got a modern minimalist vibe? A sleek, cool-tone plank could seriously be your jam. More of a comfy, cozy aesthetic? Warm wood tones are probably calling your name.
Gray LVP was a huge trend the past few years that is now seeing it’s way out, so I definitely recommend straying away from color trends for something like your floors! It’s a pretty large and permanent fixture of your home, so when in doubt keeping things neutral and classic is always safe bet.
Timeless Neutrals: A Smart Choice
Personally, I was on a mission to revamp my floors without dropping a fortune, and let me tell you, going for that classic, neutral shade of luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring was the right choice. If we want to add trendy elements to our home, we’ll do so with some cheap Amazon decor or Target furniture. Things that are a bit easier and less costly to update as the trends change!.
Also when you choose a more neutral LVP, you’re snagging a chameleon for your floors. Morning light or chill evening vibes, the color shifts subtly and although can lean more warm or cool depending, it will still feel very neutral in general. This makes it super easy to decorate around it because it’s not going to clash with a whole lot.
Budgeting Tips for How to Choose LVP Flooring
Okay, let’s get real about the budget for installing LVP flooring. Because you may fallen head over heels for some gorgeous luxury vinyl plank flooring and it’s price per square foot, but you also have to consider a few other things that will drive up the cost of your project!
Underlayment: First up, when you’re pricing out that dreamy LVP, the price per square foot might sound too good to be true if you have to purchase underlayment separately. Some planks come with it already attached, others don’t. Regardless, it’s necessary for LVP flooring because it keeps things comfy underfoot, helping your planks last longer. Some types also absorb noise and moisture better than others. Definitely do you research here! There are different types (cork, foam, rubber, to name a few!) and you need to know your home’s needs in order to choose the right one.
Installation: Yep, installation costs are sadly a thing. Unless you’re planning to DIY it (we are unfortunately not skilled in that department), getting a pro to do it will be a major expense of the project. So keep those dollar signs in mind when you’re tallying up.
Additional Materials: Things like transitions, moldings, and all those finishing touches that give your space that polished look. These will also be part of the overall cost beyond just the planks.
Tax & Shipping: Self explanatory but always a rude awakening if you aren’t budgeting for that aspect when looking at the end price.
My last tip? Always pad that budget and prepare for the worst. Why? Because life loves to chime in with surprises. So be kind to future you and plan for those “just in cases.” Because when it comes to home projects and home ownership in general- something always goes awry!
Cheapest Possible Way to Get LVP Flooring
Okay so given everything we went over about budgeting, I am going to run through the cheapest possible way to get Luxury Vinyl Planking into your home for those of you that want the real “cheapskate” way to do this.
- DIY the installation. This is the most effective tip as far as overall budget. If you can do it yourself or have a friend or family member help you, then you’re going to save TONS. Luckily LVP is relatively easy to install yourself and there are tons of resources online to help you DIY it!
- Be willing to compromise on the color of your LVP flooring. The less popular colors are less in demand and thus a lot cheaper per square foot. Going from $5 down to $1.50 per square foot can certainly make a HUGE difference in the overall cost.
- Opt for a cheaper underlayment option. However, I definitely DO NOT recommend going this route in a room where flooding is possible (like a basement) or “wet” rooms like your kitchen or bathrooms.
- Compare, compare, compare. Get multiple quotes, visit multiple stores. Ask for discounts. Do your due diligence and you can be confident you’re getting the absolute best price available to you.
Final Steps on How to Choose LVP Flooring
Alright, we’ve had our fun browsing, sampling, and dreaming up the perfect LVP floors, but now comes the moment of truth. It’s time to get real and make those final calls. So grab a cup of coffee, your favorite notepad, and let’s walk through it together, shall we?
- Double-Check Those Samples: Please, oh please, give those samples one last look. Remember, lighting is a fickle friend. Ensure your chosen vinyl plank flooring looks perfect, morning to night.
- Choose the Right Color For YOU: Trust your gut on the color. If it makes you happy and ties the room together, you’re golden. Don’t let second-guessing creep in now.
- Numbers Game: Whip out the calculator and crunch those numbers one last time. Factor in the entire cost – think: underlayment and any extra materials you need. No surprises, please!
- Installation Situation: Whether you’re a brave DIY soul or outsourcing to the pros, confirm your installation plan. Know what you’re in for, time and labor-wise.
And there you have it! Take a deep breath; you’re ready to make an informed and budget-friendly decision that will transform your space. Remember, the best flooring is the one that meets your needs, makes you happy, and doesn’t break the bank. Happy flooring!
